Spending Money is Too Darn Easy

Soon, I will be the proud owner of three doormats at @ $40 each ($44.95, $39.95, and $36.95). I just spent over $120 on mats. 😮  IT WAS JUST TOO EASY! Actually, way too easy.

Let me tell you how it happened.

First mat:  I saw an ad on Facebook for a "Super Absorbent Magic Doormat." It is just one of many ads I see every day. However, I need a really good mat for my backdoor because my dogs 🐕🐕 bring dirt into the house all of the time.

The mat itself must be made of fibers from heaven because it sure has a hefty price tag. But, I read the reviews, and I decide to order one to try it out. It was expensive, but hey, it is magic, and if it means sweeping less, I'm good with that—at least one to try out.

Second mat: Oh, but wait, we are offering 60% off if you order another mat RIGHT NOW. Mind you, I have no idea what the original price is, so it sounded like a great bargain, and I need one of these untested miracle mats for my front entry as well. So, I added a second one to what I thought was the "Cart."

Third mat: Oops, I wanted gray instead of brown for the front door; let me add that to my cart. Now I realize that there isn't a cart for my additional impulse purchases. The second and third mats are automatic, and my payments have been rendered through my now linked PayPal account. In a matter of one minute, I had purchased three mats. 😢

$121.85 spent on magic, unproven (by me) doormats. If you read my 'Frugality' post, it may surprise you that I even purchased the first mat, and definitely surprised you that I let myself get suckered into a second one. It did me too!

RETAILERS ARE GREAT AT GETTING OUR MONEY

  • They got me on Facebook, which is not the first time I have ordered items from FB ads. You scroll and see a miracle product that you were just thinking you needed. Like my magic mats, FB is magic. 😏
  • They offered me a one-time and time-sensitive discount on a second purchase. You are forced to make a quick decision. If you note the first and second mats' prices, there isn't much of a difference.
  • Quick and easy ordering linked to PayPal or the credit card on file with your smartphone. Press two buttons, and your item will be on its way. They got me! It was easy, and I love things to be easy. UGH.

In a world where everything seems so complicated, why is spending money so darn easy? Why do we fall for the ads that cross our path? Why do we think that spending $40 on a doormat is a great idea? Why do we make a $40 mat a need and not just a want? Why? Why? Why?

I'm kicking myself a little. I'm hoping that these mats are as great as the seller claims. If not, someone may be getting a miracle mat for Christmas! 😁😁

Be blessed,

Soon to be owner of two miracle doormats

Update: the customer service department has already refunded me for a mat.
